<span style="color: #0070c0; font-family: "kristen itc"; font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I
have completed my addition to my Grade 2 assessment/tracking grids, and have
posted them in my tpt store. This
package includes all subjects from the Ontario, Canada, Curriculum (except French). There are 2 formats included. The first method of tracking is for each
student to have his/her own data pages.
These are handy for parent conferences, SRT meetings, and doing report
cards. The second method is on ledger
paper and has 10 students per page. This
is handy for a doing quick assessments and see a quick visual of how students
are doing overall and compared to one another.
This is good feedback for yourself (ie. If everyone is underachieving,
how can I change my teaching method; If everyone is doing exceptional [pat self
on back], how can I challenge them more; if a couple of students are much lower
than the others, how can I support their learn<span style="color: #0070c0; font-family: "kristen itc"; font-size: 16pt;">ing). Here are some sample pages:
<span style="color: purple; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My Back to School theme was 'Happy New Year'. The decorations were from a New Year's Eve party my daughter had. She was happy the '2016' paraphernalia could be used again. All from Party City. All the children received a string of beads and a horn blower (from the Dollar Store). As I met them outside, we went and gathered in the picnic shelter, so the 'honking' was not in the school. :) It was a great way for them to expel some nervous energy right from the get go.

It certainly has been a mild winter in Southern Ontario compared to the last few years. We had a green Christmas, which was fine by me. It was so mild, making driving safe, and getting around much easier. My 92 year old dad was able to drive himself to my house. He also helped with the dinner. :) It snowed the week after Christmas, covering the backyard with a nice layer of white, icy snow. My puppies could finally go out and enjoy the backyard. They loved it!!! They hadn't been able to because it is a mud bath back there from having a new septic system put in and then an above ground pool. After the temperature plummeting for a couple of days, it is back to warm again. This morning, the snow is nearly gone from the yard. It's been raining for two days. I had to take the pups out for a leash walk. Bennett does not like the rain, and just wanted to go home. But, Lady doesn't seem to even notice it.

About school: I added to my Christmas Around the World unit this year. I made cute little spiral notebooks for each student, with fill-in-the-blanks for each country we visited. We started off, December 1st, with a trip on the Polar Express to the North Pole. This gets everyone in the spirit. I place a bell on each student's chair to put in their 'suitcase'. We also did directed drawing reindeer. They always turn out great. Santa Stars and popsicle stick reindeer were also made.
For each country we learn a little about Christmas traditions and then make a craft or two that go along with their traditions. I also show 'Arthur's Perfect Christmas'. I love this movie as it deals with the many traditions and cultures of Arthur's friends.
In Germany we learn about the dill pickle tradition and make a pickle ornament to hang on the treeI will be putting this unit on my Tpt store.
In Mexico we made sun catcher poinsettias.
In Bethlehem, we read about the story of the birth of Jesus. We made a candy cane craft with Baby Jesus in the crook of the cane. We also learned a little about Jewish history and Hanukkah. We made a Star of David with popiscle sticks and lots of glitter.
In Africa, we learned about Kwanzaa and made a candle holder that I put a tealight candle in.
Last year, I found a new idea on a site that I can't remember now. I send home a template of a Christmas tree, with a note to families. Each family decorate the tree, using any material they like. At school, we have a 'contest'. Every tree wins an award, such as: most glittery, most glamorous, best use of nature, cheerleader award, etc. Last year everyone in the class did one; this year I had two families that did not participate. They make a beautiful display in the hall or classroom and every kiddo is so proud of their award that I attach to their tree.

This week we are going to be finishing up our Kevin Henkes unit. And each day we will be doing our Genius Ladder Writing. My little ones this year have been struggling with writing a complete sentence. The WBT writing method certainly helps. We start each lesson with oral writing. I project the template sentence on the Smart Board and then go around our horseshoe, with each child filling in the noun, verb, or adjective. I have a few that are now doing the extender sentence, but also a couple that are not yet making a three word sentence that makes sense. Differentiation! :)

In Science, we are working on our Energy unit. Students are learning about Source of Energy and Energy Output. The Ontario Power Generation website has great resources for grades 1, 6, and 9. There are printable books for teachers and student workbooks. These are fantastic and match up with the provincial expectations.

Math this week, is all about patterning. I am actually using the Math Makes Sense workbook for the first time this year. I am not a big fan of the grade 1 and 2 workbooks. I love it for Grade 3 and above, to reinforce skills. I typically make up my own math lessons, getting many ideas from other teacher's blogs. Smitten With First is one of my fave's for math ideas and engaging centres.

On Friday, we are having a pretend Snow Day, since, at this point, it doesn't look like we will have one this year. Kids can wear their p.j.s and bring a stuffy. We will be reading 'Snow Day' and 'Brave Irene'. I used Amy Lemon's, Step Into Second Grade ideas. Check it out - this is my FAVOURITE teacher blog. Her Rooted in Reading packs, that she has developed this year, are jam-packed full of TERRIFIC lessons and craftivities!!!

Still pouring rain out there, but I have to go out in it to do a few Christmas returns, and drop my car at the garage --- gas leak! eeeek! Enjoy your Sunday! xoxAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04635971094125685063noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5003989431033174597.post-11509666275545226282015-10-31T19:01:00.000-07:002015-11-01T05:09:53.482-08:00Hello Everyone; especially my Russian visitors. :)
I just thought I'd let you know that I finished the Grade 1 tracking sheets that cover all of the Overall and Specific Expectations in the Ontario Curriculum. I have them on my Tpt store. They are my first item I am selling. And --- wait for it --- I have sold 7!! I'm so excited, especially because it is a product with a limited audience - grade 1 and Ontario. It is fully editable though, so it could be adjusted to other curriculums. It gives a nice framework.
greet them first thing, take attendance, and collect agendas/notes. But, I’m sure I will get used to it soon
enough. Once a week, I get a double prep
first thing. Too bad I couldn’t just
sleep in and come at 10:45. J

Fownies, and see who won. If the Smilies
won, the class gets a point towards Friday’s Mind Soccer. More on that later. Next, we move on to the Calendar. The second week of school, I assigned the
classroom jobs. One person does the
calendar all week. This makes it easier
than trying to figure out who hasn’t had a turn, etc. They sure do love using the pointer and
reciting things. J
The next part of our meeting is Power Pix. We review the ones we have done, and if I
feel they know them well enough, I introduce a new one. We are going slowly at this point. We have done four: Sentence, Noun, Title, and Days of the
Week. I will then wrap up our carpet
time with a little story from out Kid’s Bible, say a little prayer, and off for
a snack and then Recess.

July was such a peaceful, beautiful, hot, relaxing month. August --- not so much!!!! We moved. If you've been reading my blog, you'll know that we were moving to Abu Dhabi. Due to my daughter's health condition, we are staying put for at least two years. My house did sell, so I had to find another place. After looking at approximately 50 homes, bidding on a few, home inspections coming back scary, I chose one. I knew it would need a few minor repairs, but,,, I was not prepared for the extent of the filth! Good thing we had two weeks before we had to move in. And another fun surprise - we had to replace the septic!!! Great. I had intended on treating us all to an inground pool. There went half of that money. Another above ground it will be. :) That's ok, we were happy with our above ground. Anyway, I am still in the depths of unpacking and trying to find a place for everything - we downsized. I never want to move again!

I did have some time to work on some new assessment/tracking sheets. These are specifically for the Grade 1 Ontario Curriculum. I keep a Data Binder for each student. I will have these sheets in the binder, using tabs to separate subject areas. The tracking sheets will be followed by work samples. These are super for parent interviews and report card writing. I have posted a one page sneak preview on TPT [my first tpt listing!!:)]. This is a little freebie to see if people are interested in it.
I am just putting the finishing touches on the rest. I will be posting checklists for the WHOLE Grade 1 Ontario Curriculum -- all subject areas, all Overall and Specific Expectations. Please have a look, download, and tell me if you would like more.

Time to get ready to visit a Doggie Daycare. They are having an open house. :)

Enjoy your Saturday!
<span style="color: #33cc33; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 14.0pt;">On March 4, my youngest daughter, was diagnosed with
osteosarcoma. Anyone who has gone
through something like this would understand the devastation we felt. For 19 days, we went through many tests to
determine the extent of the cancer. The
first CT and x-ray showed a spot in her lung.
That was the worst news and the worst case scenario for us. The tumour ate through her humerus until it was so thin, it broke.

answer. I held a prayer service at my
house, had one at church, and had many, many, many people praying for her all
over the world. Prayers for Ella God listened to these prayers, and on March
23, we were told that she did not have cancer.
She did have an aneurysmal bone cyst.
She had to have ~4 inches of her humerus taken out and a donor bone put in. They put a steel plate in her arm, secured
with screws, to support the bone. She
had the surgery mid-April and has been doing well since. It will take about 2 years for the arm to
fully heal. She was very fortunate that
there was no nerve damage during surgery.
She now has full motion of her arm, but cannot do any weight
bearing/lifting. The x-rays show new ‘fluffy’
bone growth. God is good!

start with oral writing and then move to paper.

January means back to routines. And by this, I mean reviewing the routines from September. We got a little lazy with them during the month of December. As I've mentioned before, I use Whole Brain Teaching as my classroom management backbone. Here are the highlights of the regular techniques I use:

Lines: When I call 'Lines', the class three-peats it, 'Lines, lines, lines', as they move into their line order. I have a set line order that we use all year no matter what - doesn't matter who is VIP of the week, whose birthday it is, etc. Everyone is given a number on day one, and that is the order they line up in. This has been very handy for me on field trips and fire drills. I call 'Number off' and they say their numbers in order. It is a quick and easy way for me to see if I have all of my kiddies. We use this order for lining up, order of the hooks in closet, and various other uses through the year, like grouping - '1, 6, 11, 16 - you are one group'. You get the idea...

Class-Okay: This is the attention grabber. When I need the classes attention, I say, 'Class' and they respond 'Yes'. You can make it fun and keep it fresh by mixing it up. 'Classity Class' - 'Yessity Yes'; 'Class-a-doodle' - 'Yes-a-doodle', etc. It is unbelievable how effective this is.

Hands & Eyes: After doing the Class-Okay, if it is something really important, I will say 'Hands and eyes'. Students fold their hands and look at me while saying, 'Hands and eyes'.

Scoreboard: When doing all the above mentioned, I use a scoreboard on the blackboard and give a smilie or frownie for how well they responded. A smilie gives them permission for a 1 second party of pumping their arms and saying, 'Oh yeah', and a frownie gives permission for a 1 second sulk of giving a collective mighty groan.

5 Classroom Rules: You can read more about them on the WBT website. But I will just say that we will be reviewing these at each reentry to the classroom for the first couple of weeks back.

You can find more information on all of these techniques on the WBT website or in their amazing book,

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">That is what my site will be titled next year. A couple of years ago I started looking into
teaching internationally. It’s something
I have always wanted to do but haven’t.
There was always something ‘guilting’ me to stay put. With both my daughters in their teens, the
oldest in college and the youngest with a sense of adventure, I decided it was
time. From browsing the internet, the
agency that stood out to me was Teach Away.
Of course, I wanted a job in Italy, Switzerland, or Australia. These were not to be found. I applied on line and the next day received a
call for a phone interview. I was
accepted for a position in Abu Dhabi! Where
is that? I had never heard of it! They wanted me to go right away. I couldn’t go right away --- I had a job,
house, commitments. I began preparing my
parents (I’m an only child) and children that I would eventually be doing
this. I decided when my youngest
completed grade 12, would be a good time.
That is spring 2015. I told my
rep at Teach Away this and my file was put on hold.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">Over the past two years we have researched Abu dhabi, Teach Away, and
many teacher blogs that are teaching there now.
The excitement grew.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">This past fall, I reawakened my file.
I had to do another phone interview for everything to be brought
up-to-date. On November 22nd
I went to the Harbour Castle in Toronto for an in-person interview.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">The first step was to check in with all of my paper work – copies of
passport, degrees, criminal check, reference letters, OCT certificates, resume,
passport photos, medical form.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">Next step was a small group session first. We watched via satellite, as two women filled
us in on some of the ADEC policies, contract info, what to do if you don’t like
it, and a few cultural differences. They
were both very friendly and wearing what business women in Canada might wear.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">Then we went back to a waiting room to wait for our individual
interviews. I had expected the room to
be filled with young new teachers. This
was not the case at all – there was 1 that I would say was under 30. The rest were middle-aged. I talked to a man beside me that told me he was
from Nova Scotia and had been teaching internationally for some time. He takes a two year contract, then comes back
for a year – doesn’t work – visits family and friends, then travels to visit
friends he has met from around the world.
Then he repeats it. Sounds good
to me! My hope is that this will lead me
to connections to teach in other countries.

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">I was first up for the IPI. What
a difference experience! I was led in to
a big conference room with an open laptop sitting on a table. From a distance, I peered around to see who
would be interviewing me. There was a
woman, maybe in her 50’s, and a man, 30ish.
I sat down and put on the headphones.
I have never skyped or anything before, so this was really
different. The woman was quite strict
with her questions and her reactions to my responses. She had me a bit nervous as she seemed to
dismiss everything I said. The man was
more casual. [Good cop, bad cop? I don’t know.] When I left, I really wasn’t sure how I
did. The rep’s told me I would hear in
about 6 weeks. Ok, I am ok with it
either way. I have a job I love, at a
school I love!

<span lang="EN-CA" style="color: #ff33cc; font-family: "Kristen ITC"; font-size: 16.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA;">On Monday, Nov. 24, after school, I got an email with a Letter of
Offer! The interview was only Saturday! That was awesome. I was so excited – a few tears escaped! Now the process of authenticating all my
documents has begun. I cannot find my
diploma for my teaching degree. It was too
long ago! I had to contact the college
and pay, and am now waiting for a new one.
My lawyer’s secretary said it will be about $200 for authentication.
I use this book to introduce retell.
I do a craftivity with the children, using black construction paper,

for the Beginning, Middle, and End. This
is a great diagnostic to see where your students are at for understanding and

vocabulary’. Even though the setting is
kindergarten, the mean girls are the same at every age/grade. Thank goodness for Mrs. Twinkle! I start with a picture of chrysanthemum on
chart paper and we discuss character traits.
The vocabulary in this story leads nicely into syllable lessons – lots of
4 syllable words! We also discuss how
many letters in our names, how many vowels & consonants. From the number of letters in their names, students used that number and showed different ways to make that number. The students go on google to find what their
names mean. Using Hollie’s packet, we did
a comparison activity and a crafitivity of ‘I bloom when....’ and ‘I wilt
when....’ We also made a chrysanthemum
with petals of adjectives. Attached to
this were two sentences: Chrysanthemum
was ____________. I know this because
_____________. This activity requires
students to find evidence in the text. I
introduced the ‘Because Clapper’ from WBT.
The students caught on quickly and wanted to share their responses
orally, using the gestures for capitals, because, and periods. If I could only get them as eager to write it
on paper...

This is our Scoreboard from WBT. I use it as a class management tool. I never let Smilies or Frownies have a difference of more than 3. This keeps it exciting and motivating. When students get a Smilie, they yell, "Oh ya!" with a mighty fist pump. It has to be altogether and very quick (1 second party), or they get a Frownie. When they get a Frownie, there is a mighty groan with a shoulder shrug.
Here is my Super Improver Team wall. The year starts with each child's name on a white card. They get a sticker each time they improve in any area. It could be academic, responsibility, organization, self-regulation, you name it. This is a place for everyone to succeed as anyone can improve at something. Once a student has 10 stickers they move up the ranks - first they become a Rookie and get an orange card, and so on. Start out the year with lots of stickers to get the excitement going and then slow down. You want them to respect how difficult it is to reach 'Living Legend'. There are many fun strategies to use along the way which you can find at Whole Brain Teaching.
I got this idea from Clutter Free Classroom a couple of years ago. It is an acrostic for M A T H. M - math facts; A - at your seat; T - technology; H - hands-on. I have 5 centres - the 5th rotation is working with the teacher. I just really liked this acrostic, so left it at that and the students know they have one rotation with me. :)
Yes, it is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada! It has been a chilly but nice and sunny

had a big fire in the backyard to get rid of all the giant branches that have been falling off the trees in my front yard.
It was extremely windy when they fell, but it does have me a little

the end they know it inside and out?!
Here are some of the activities I used:
Next we moved on to the Smart Board and the base ten manipulatives that
are in the gallery. The kiddos always
love when they can play with the Smart Board – instant engagement! At first I would pick the number, but once
they got the hang of it, I had one student pick a number and another show it in
Base 10’s. Here is a picture of the
format I was using:<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-no-proof: yes; mso-themecolor: text2;"><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600"

2-digit numbers for each student. They determined
how many ten’s and one’s and then cut them out and put them in the correct side
of their mini-folder. This also allowed
for a mini-lesson on even and odd numbers.
Using bright paper and creating ‘mini things’ always excites kiddies!
This year I got some fantastic ideas to use in my room from Pinterest. During the day, my Firsties drew a self-portrait and filled in clues of who they were. I spread these around the tables for the parents to find their child. Once parents located their little darling, they used a white crayon to write a secret message. The next day, students painted with water colours to find out their parent's message.
rods, 20 smiley faces, $20, 20 tally marks, etc. Students picked their own number and showed
at least 5 ways to represent it in their math journals.
